The employer you choose shapes the career you build. Most discussions about an EASA Part-66 license focus on what it authorizes: the modules passed, the category held, the aircraft it applies to. Far less attention goes to a decision that matters just as much once the license is in hand the type of organization a technician chooses to work for. An airline, a third-party MRO, and an original equipment manufacturer all employ Part-66 holders, but the work itself, the pace of progression, and the shape of a resulting career differ enough that this choice deserves the same consideration as the license category itself.
Understanding what actually separates these three environments helps technicians make a more deliberate choice, rather than simply accepting the first offer that comes along.
Working inside an airline’s own maintenance operation
Technicians employed directly by an airline typically work within that carrier’s in-house maintenance organization, focused on a fleet the airline actually operates. This tends to mean deep, repeated familiarity with a narrower set of aircraft types, since the fleet in front of a technician is the same fleet, day after day, rather than a rotating mix of client aircraft.
This environment often suits technicians who value operational rhythm and predictability, and who want their expertise to deepen around a specific fleet over time. Line maintenance work, with its tight turnaround windows between flights, is common here, and the pace tends to be dictated by flight schedules rather than by a broader maintenance project timeline.
Working across client fleets at a third-party MRO
A third-party MRO, by contrast, services aircraft on behalf of multiple airline clients, which means a technician’s exposure spans a wider range of aircraft types, ages, and configurations than an in-house airline role typically offers. Heavy maintenance checks, structural work, and more complex, multi-day maintenance events are more common in this environment than the fast-turnaround line maintenance work typical of an airline.
This setting tends to suit technicians who want breadth over depth, particularly earlier in a career, since exposure to varied aircraft and varied client requirements builds a more generalized skill set faster than working within a single operator’s fleet. It is also, often, where the more complex structural and inspection specializations discussed elsewhere, such as Non-Destructive Testing, are put into practice most frequently.
Working closer to the aircraft’s origin at an OEM
Original equipment manufacturers occupy a different position entirely. Technicians working within or closely alongside an OEM’s maintenance and support operations are positioned closer to the aircraft’s design and engineering side than either an airline or an independent MRO. This can mean involvement in warranty-related maintenance work, technical support functions, or maintenance program development that feeds back into how the aircraft itself is supported over its operational life.
This path tends to suit technicians drawn toward the engineering and technical documentation side of maintenance, rather than purely hands-on repair work, and it often opens toward roles that blend maintenance knowledge with technical writing, training development, or field service support for the aircraft type in question.
How the pace of progression differs
Career progression does not move at the same speed or in the same direction across these three environments. Airline roles often progress along a relatively defined internal ladder tied to seniority and fleet-specific experience. MRO roles tend to reward breadth and specialization, since technicians who develop a recognized expertise in a particular check type or inspection method become more valuable to an organization serving many clients rather than one. OEM-adjacent roles progress differently still, often rewarding a combination of maintenance background and technical or engineering aptitude over pure hands-on repetition.
None of these progression patterns is faster or better in an absolute sense. They simply reward different things, which is why a technician’s own priorities, depth versus breadth, hands-on work versus technical documentation, operational rhythm versus varied projects, matter as much as the license itself in determining which environment will feel like genuine progress rather than a lateral move.
The license opens the door. The employer shapes what’s behind it.
An EASA Part-66 license makes a technician eligible to work across airlines, MROs, and OEMs alike, but eligibility is not the same as fit. Each environment asks something different of a technician and offers a different shape of career in return.
For technicians early in this decision, the most useful exercise is not ranking these three paths against each other, but identifying which kind of work, and which pace of progression, actually matches how they want to spend the years immediately following certification.
