Before an aircraft can fly, someone has to sign off on it. That signature belongs to a licensed technician, and the industry is running short of people qualified to give it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boeing’s 2025 pilot and technician outlook, released in July 2025, lays out a number that should stop any aspiring technician in their tracks: the industry needs almost 2.4million new aviation workers by 2044. Of that total, 710,000 are maintenance technicians, alongside 660,000 pilots and 1,000,000 cabin crew. Two out of every three of those technician jobs exist simply to replace someone retiring, not to staff new growth. This is not an industry expanding into new territory. It is an industry trying to replace an entire generation before that generation finishes walking out the door. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number keeps climbing even as the industry tries to catch up. Boeing’s newer 2026 outlook  has already pushed the technician figure to 728,000, a sign that even the people producing these long-term forecasts keep underestimating how fast the gap is widening. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where the pressure is concentrated<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boeing breaks the 710,000 figure down by region. North America needs 123,000 technicians. Europe and nearby regions need 165,000. China needs 131,000. Southeast Asia needs 78,000. South Asia needs 45,000. Africa needs 24,000. Europe carries the second-largest regional share on the planet, trailing only China, and represents close to a quarter of total global demand on its own. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What this means for EASA students and license holders<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Europe’s shortage plays out differently than a single-country labor gap, because an EASA license is not tied to any one national job market. A technician licensed under Part-66 can work in any of the more than thirty EASA member states without requalifying under a separate national system, which means the 165,000-technician gap is not one shortage, it is dozens of national shortages a single licence can move freely between. A B2 avionics technician who cannot find an opening in Spain is not shut out of the shortage, they are one relocation away from a labor market in Germany, Poland, or Ireland facing the same gap for the same reason. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That mobility changes what “waiting out the shortage” actually looks like for a student still completing their licence. The calculation is not simply finish training versus don’t. It is: which of thirty-plus national markets, each retiring technicians on its own timeline, will have the tightest labor market by the time a given student is licensed and ready to work. A student targeting only their home country’s MRO sector is competing in one national queue. A student willing to work anywhere the EASA licence is valid is drawing from a shortage spread across a continent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What this means for FAA students and A&P holders<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

North America’s shortage works differently, because an FAA Airframe and Powerplant certificate is a single national credential covering one labor market, not a license valid across dozens of countries the way an EASA license is. That means the entire 123,000-technician gap Boeing projects for North America sits inside one regulatory system, with no equivalent to an EASA technician’s option of simply working in whichever member state has the tightest market that year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What that concentration produces is visible in how fast the shortage is accelerating within that single market. Oliver Wyman’s 2023 projection put the North American shortfall at 12,000 to 18,000 workers, worsening toward a 2027 peak of roughly 43,000 to 48,000. By February 2026, the real shortfall had already reached about 17,000, with the peak now expected in 2028 at up to 30,000, a steeper and earlier curve than the original forecast. Because there is no second national market to absorb the excess demand the way EASA’s multi-country system can, that pressure shows up directly inside US training pipelines and hiring practices instead of spreading across borders. At Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, that pressure is why the program is expanding from 185 to 350 students, and why an instructor there describes employers telling students outright that they will hire every graduate the school produces. With roughly 161,000 people currently in the field against a need for 123,000 more hires through 2044, nearly one new technician is needed for every 1.3 currently working, a ratio concentrated entirely within one country’s labor market rather than spread across a continent the way Europe’s shortage is. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two systems, one underlying truth<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For an FAA-certified technician, there’s no equivalent release valve. Every technician competing for every opening is drawing from and competing within the same single pool. That has two concrete effects: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Wage and hiring pressure concentrates faster and harder.<\/strong> Since there’s no adjacent labor market to relieve pressure, employers in the tightest pockets (like Cincinnati State’s local hiring market) have to compete directly against every other US employer for the same finite supply \u2014 hence “we’ll take every one of you” and rising starting wages, visible in real time rather than diffused across borders. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
      \n
    1. The shortage is more visible and more measurable, but also less escapable for the technician.<\/strong> An EASA tech in an oversupplied region has an exit (relocate within the bloc). An FAA tech has fewer options besides waiting for supply to catch up nationally, or leaving aviation maintenance for another field entirely. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      What this actually means for someone choosing a path<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

       An EASA licence gives a technician more optionality to chase the best local market conditions, but that same mobility means no single European country’s shortage will necessarily resolve quickly, since supply can always shift in from elsewhere. An FAA certificate ties a technician to one market’s conditions, but because there’s no cross-border relief, that market’s shortage-driven wage growth and hiring urgency are likely to hit harder and sooner within that one system, precisely because there’s nowhere else for supply to come from or demand to bleed off to. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
